Tax attorney, accountant or tax adviser?

When you need help with Dutch taxes, it is not always clear which professional you should contact. You may search for a tax attorney or accountant, while in many cases what you actually need is a Dutch tax adviser.

For tax returns, bookkeeping, benefits, box 3, international tax matters and most practical questions about the Dutch tax system, you can come directly to me.

I help individuals and business owners understand their tax position, complete their returns and keep their tax affairs properly organised.

For most Dutch tax matters, a tax adviser is all you need

You do not usually need an accountant or attorney to prepare your tax return, organise your bookkeeping or answer a practical tax question.

I can help you with tax matters such as:

  • Dutch personal income tax returns
  • Income tax returns for business owners
  • VAT returns
  • Bookkeeping and business administration
  • Dutch benefits and allowances
  • Box 3 taxation of savings and investments
  • Mortgage interest deduction and other home-related tax matters
  • Dutch taxation of foreign property
  • Tax consequences of emigration and immigration
  • M-form tax returns
  • Provisional tax assessments and tax calculations
  • Correspondence with the Dutch Tax Administration
  • Other personal and business tax questions

These are the matters for which many people search for an accountant or tax attorney. In most cases, however, a tax adviser can provide exactly the assistance you need.

Do you need an accountant?

Many people use the word accountant for anyone who handles bookkeeping, annual figures or tax returns. In the Netherlands, however, accountant is a protected professional title.

For ordinary bookkeeping, annual figures, VAT returns, income tax returns and practical tax advice, you usually do not need a registered accountant. I can take care of these matters for you.

A registered accountant is mainly required for specific formal work, such as a statutory audit or an assurance statement. Most individuals, sole proprietors and small businesses do not need these services.

So when you are looking for an accountant to help with your administration or taxes, there is a good chance that I can provide the help you are actually looking for.

Do you need a tax attorney or tax lawyer?

You usually do not need a tax attorney simply because you disagree with the Dutch Tax Administration or because your case has progressed beyond ordinary correspondence.

I can assist you throughout the process, including with correspondence, objections, appeals and proceedings before the tax court. I can prepare the written arguments, represent you and attend the hearing.

This means that you can also contact me when you have received a tax assessment or decision that you disagree with. In many cases, I can handle the matter from the first response to the Dutch Tax Administration through to the court proceedings.

A specialised tax lawyer may be more appropriate in exceptional situations, such as criminal tax proceedings or a highly complex legal dispute that falls outside my expertise. When that is the case, I will tell you clearly.

Help with bookkeeping and business taxes

As a business owner, you may think you need an accountant to keep your administration in order. For most sole proprietors and small businesses, that is not the case.

I can help you with your bookkeeping, VAT returns, annual figures, income tax return and practical questions about running your business in the Netherlands.

You deal directly with me, so your administration and tax returns are handled together. This helps prevent information from being passed between different advisers and gives you one clear point of contact.

Help with personal and international tax matters

You can also contact me when your situation is more complicated than a standard Dutch tax return.

I can help with box 3, the Dutch taxation of foreign property and income from abroad, the tax consequences of emigration or immigration, M-form tax returns, mortgage interest deduction and other special tax situations.

You do not need to determine in advance whether your question belongs with an accountant, lawyer or tax adviser. Tell me what is going on, and I will assess what needs to be done.

Clear and personal assistance

You deal directly with me. I look carefully at your situation, explain your options and tell you clearly what I can do for you.

Your file is not passed from one person to another. Communication remains personal, practical and understandable.

In most cases, I can handle the full matter for you. When a registered accountant or lawyer is genuinely required, I will be honest about that.

Not sure who you need?

You do not have to work that out yourself.

Send me a brief description of your situation. I will let you know whether I can help and what the next step would be.
